Micro:bit Education Foundation sponsorship for iSTEM+ – leading edge Gomer!

Go Gomer!

We are proud of our home grown `gSTEM’ Key Stage 2 version of the iSTEM+ approach which is being showcased in the STEAM village, by Mrs Digby and Mrs Toone at BETT 2017 on 25 January at 17.10. The `iSTEM+ approach’ is an initiative to enable schools to respond to UK employers’ needs by equipping all learners 5-19 with STEM, digital and employability skills. iSTEM+ stands for “integrated STEM and more subjects, skills and people“. It has been developed by a team from the Cambridge Centre for Innovation in Technological Education CCITE led by its Founder, Prof Adrian Oldknow.

Interestingly, Gomer Junior and Bay House are the host partners in the Portsmouth Hub for the Bloodhound SSC’s 2017 ‘Race for the line’ model rocket car competition. Teams of students from both schools are already designing their rocket cars, which will each carry a BBC micro:bit to record the cars’ accelerations. Bay House is one of the pilot sites for a new CCITE-designed initiative called `Student Digital Ambassadors’ SDA.

The Micro:bit Education Foundation is delighted to announce that it will be providing sponsorship to support the use of micro:bits in embedded STEM activities across the full age and ability range within the Gosport & Fareham Multi Academy Trust (GFM). The Foundation is also providing sponsorship for the European `Kids Inspiring Kids in STEM’ (KIKS) project and has already sent 100 micro:bits to each participating country to support the development of innovative cross-curricular STEM approaches in the participating schools.

The Foundation sponsorship will support a ground-breaking initiative in Gosport schools in 2017 through which every Key Stage 2 in  Gomer Junior School and Year 7 pupils in the GFM will make use of micro:bits in open-ended STEM explorations designed and supported by older students assisted by external experts from organisations such as the IET. The Foundation believes that this model of collaborative development is one which could profitably be followed by schools throughout the UK.
