In the UK, October is known nationally as Black History Month. One of our School Councillors requested that we found some learning time to learn about some incredible individuals due to it not being part of our formal history curriculum. At Gomer, we are aware that over the centuries some people have been treated very unfairly. Often the reason for the unfairness is due to the colour of people’s’ skin, religion, beliefs and culture. We are aware that we are lucky enough to live in a democracy which enables us to be treated equally and for everyone’s opinion to be valued. We used some assembly and history learning time today to remember the importance of tolerance and mutual respect. We also learnt about individuals, who were black, and fought to change things for the better. The school recognise the importance of learning about Black History in the UK and globally too.
