Last month Bikeit! Ray attended Gomer Community Coffee morning to tell us all about the work he does with Sustrans and the work he supports in schools.  Ray has been a regular face at Gomer Junior school over the last 18 months and helped us achieve our Silver School Mark of Excellence in Sustainable travel.
After listening to her children talk about all the exciting things the Bikeit! crew organise at Gomer, Tina Lawson approached Ray and asked if he could help her be a better rider.  A little apprehensive and unsure of herself on a bike, Tina wanted to become more confident to enable her to ride her bike safely on the road and to ride with her children for fun.
Always up for a new challenge, Ray agreed to help.  First step was to check Tina’s bike was road worthy and safe, unfortunately it needed a little work.   Looking at the positive of this, Tina helped Ray and now knows how to maintain her and her children’s bikes!
Next step was learning to be more confident on her bike.  Using the safe environment of the school playground, Ray eased Tina through a variety of skills including mounting and dismounting, signalling, push starts and stopping safely.  Tina was delighted “I feel so much more confident now and I’m looking forward to fun bike rides with the children.”
Following Tina’s success, Ray and the Bikeit! Co-ordinator Mrs Bottriell are hoping to organise some adult bike maintenance and adult learn to ride workshops this term. Watch this space….
