New technologies inspire children to be creative, to communicate and to learn. However, while the internet is a great resource, it is important that young people be protected from the risks that they may encounter.
What can you do? Remember that children and young people today have grown up with ever changing technology and social media. Don’t be afraid to ask about technology or terminology if you are unsure; pupils and e-learners like to share knowledge. Be familiar with some of the more common internet dangers such as bullying and grooming. Be aware that these dangers will also evolve and change.
Cyber Bullying is an extension of face-to-face bullying and can cause significant harm. The opportunity to bully using the internet has increased significantly with the widespread ownership of mobile devices by young people and with the proliferation of use of social media sites. Whilst some cyber-bullying can be deliberate and aggressive, some incidents can be unintentional and the result of not thinking of the consequences, e.g. forwarding on a joke or being verbally offensive through interactive game play. Help make your children aware how they can keep themselves safe on-line. For example, when playing games on-line, play only with people they know, and are friends with on-line. Primary children are too young to have a FaceBook account and you should make yourself aware of other mediums they might be using e.g. Instagram. Are children aware of who is ‘following them’? Children need to always be mindful that you can never be 100% sure who you are talking to on-line.
During our E Safety Week after half-term, we will be looking at these issues in more detail to help keep your children safe. You are encouraged to attend our GLC (during and after school on Wednesday 24 February – see calendar for more information.
