On Wednesday, Year 4 went to Butser Ancient farm to find out what life was like for the Celts, Romans and Saxons. The children first met in the Saxon House and learnt how they constructed the building with wood for the frame and walls made from wattle and daub. During the morning, tried their hands at spinning using real sheeps wool and a wooden spinning tool. they had a tour of the Roman villa and learnt that the Romans were great engineers and that they invented under ground heating. There were certainly mixed feelings about the outside communal toilets! After lunch the children became arachnologists and found artefacts in their own pit. They found pottery, bones, metal tools and teeth! The children also learnt about clay pots and had a go at making our own from clay dug from the ground. It was really sticky and difficult to work with but we helped each other. It was an awesome day!
