Last week, as part of their unit, properties and changes of materials, Year 5 had an afternoon of investigative science. The children built upon their experiments and learning from Year 4 to discuss key vocabulary and then to design their own investigations around materials that dissolve. Following this, they explored ways to separate different mixtures, using their knowledge of different materials to decide which materials would work best e.g. filtering, sieving and evaporating. The Year 5 adults were impressed by the children’s approach to this and how they explored and experimented with different resources. The children loved creating and writing their own investigative question and were able share observations and findings with one another using key scientific vocabulary – some have thought about further investigations they may want to carry out based on what they have discovered today. There was a great deal of discussion around mixtures being reversible or irreversible and upon recognising that the experiments today all resulted in reversible changes the children are excited to explore and find out more about irreversible changes in out next lesson.
