Today, we welcome back the puppetry team from Unexpected Places. They shared a story which was to help our children explore the often uncomfortable topic of bereavement.

The content of the puppet show was Anna and Sam (the puppets) who are siblings – sometimes they get on and sometimes they don’t in the true way siblings do.  Sam gets killed in a road traffic accident (you don’t see this happen but the lighting and sound effects allude to this), the story then progresses on to how Anna copes after, the feelings she has, the struggles she then has crossing the road (fear). Her teacher explains to her that her brother is ‘looking down on her’ and the confusion this use of language causes her, the funeral where she lays a flower at Sam’s picture, making a memory box and then the puppeteer talking as an adult about how Sam will always be a part of her life.

The production was supported by the charity Simon Says and the children will be given a booklet which contains the illustrated story and a little information about Simon Says. The children were well supported today by all staff and a colleague from Simon Says to ensure that questions the children had were answered.
