Did you know that we throw away about 600 million batteries every year? Over 20, 000 tonnes of batteries end up in landfill sites – that’s as heavy as 4000 elephants. So, to help reduce this waste, we are collecting used batteries for DURACELL to recycle. By recycling them batteries will avoid landfill and be used to make useful materials such as steel, zinc and manganese. Gomer Junior learnt about battery recycling in assembly yesterday and were shown the different batteries we can recycle through school – in brief, no car batteries or the flat batteries found in watches and calculators. Each child has been sent home with a  collection box which identifies the batteries we are seeking to collect.
