All Automotive, Engineering and Manufacturing courses run by Fareham College are conducted at their Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training, or CEMAST, campus on the Daedalus airfield in Lee-on-the-Solent. 5PM had the opportunity to visit CEMAST recently as part of their gSTEM learning having been invited to the EBP South Primary Schools’ STEM Fair. The fair took place on Wednesday 28th February. Young people were divided into small groups to take part in the STEM activities which were structured into 25-minute sessions. Their enthusiasm to want to learn and engage was infectious. Young people enjoyed the STEM activities that included IBM UK’s ‘Beat the Hacker Challenge’ asking students to fix the code in an exciting scratch game, constructing aeroplanes and testing them in the simulator with GE Aviation and creating ‘blood’ using food with Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust Pathology Department. The children also had the opportunity to engineer floating devices, solve problems, assemble an engine, fly gliders and question the engineers and scientists. The children were superb ambassadors for Gomer and thoroughly enjoyed their day. It was a shame that 5PMs visit as cancelled due to the snow.
